Nigerians Express Deep Dissatisfaction with President Tinubu’s First Year

A recent national survey by the Africa Polling Institute (API) reveals significant dissatisfaction among Nigerians regarding President Bola Tinubu’s performance after his first year in office. The #NigeriaSpeaks survey indicates widespread concerns about hunger, poverty, and governance.

Presidential Performance Ratings The survey paints a bleak picture of President Tinubu’s approval ratings. An overwhelming 78% of respondents rated his performance as “poor,” with 40% categorizing it as “very poor.” Only 22% of respondents considered his performance “good.”

Legislative and Judiciary Leadership Senate President Godswill Akpabio received mixed reviews, with 48% rating his performance as “poor” and 33% as “fair.” Speaker of the House of Representatives Tajudeen Abbas fared slightly better, with 36% rating his performance as “poor” and 34% as “fair.” Chief Justice Olukayode Ariwoola also faced criticism, with 44% of respondents rating his performance as “poor” and 25% as “very poor,” though 20% rated it as “fair.”

Personal Challenges and Ministerial Performance Hunger emerged as the most significant challenge for Nigerians, affecting 36% of respondents. Other major issues included the inability to meet basic needs (28%), unemployment (13%), heightened insecurity (9%), and electricity problems (5%).

Despite overall dissatisfaction with the administration, some ministers were recognized for their performance. The top-performing ministers included Hon. Tahir Mamman (Education) at 27%, Hon. Nyesom Wike (FCT) at 25%, and Hon. David N. Umahi (Works and Housing) at 21%. Conversely, the least-performing ministers were Hon. Adebayo Adelabu (Power) at 44%, Hon. David U. Umahi (Transport) at 30%, and Hon. Wale Adebayo (Labour and Employment) at 27%.

Survey Demographics The survey included responses from 3,996 individuals, with a gender distribution of 51% male and 49% female. Age groups represented were 33% aged 18-34 years, 65% aged 35-60 years, and 2% aged 60 and above.
