The Federal Government of Nigeria, under the leadership of President Bola Tinubu, has decided to increase tuition fees for students attending Unity Secondary schools. According to a communique from the Federal Ministry of Education, new students will now have to pay ₦100,000 as tuition fees, a significant increase from the previous ₦45,000.
The circular, signed by Director Hajia Binta Abdulkadir and addressed to all Principals of Federal Unity Colleges, outlines the approved fees for the 1st term. The increment will impact various aspects of school life, including tuition and boarding fees, uniforms, textbooks, stationery, and more.
In response to the fee hike, parents, represented by the Nigerian Parents Forum, appealed to President Tinubu in June 2023 to intervene and reverse the decision, citing its arbitrary nature and insensitivity to the economic challenges faced by Nigerian families due to fuel subsidy removal.
Additionally, the House of Representatives, in July, directed the Federal Ministry of Education to review the new school fees regime and revert to the previous structure in Federal Government Colleges.
