FG Records Significant Progress in Combating Oil Theft, Says Defence Minister

Bello Matawalle, the Minister of State for Defence, has lauded the Federal Government’s achievements in the fight against oil theft in the Niger Delta region. In an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria, Matawalle highlighted practical gains, indicating a substantial reduction in oil theft activities.

The minister emphasized that due to the government’s concerted efforts and the military’s combined onslaught against oil thieves, oil production in the region has increased to 1.7 million barrels per day, up from the previous low of one million barrels per day. Matawalle expressed optimism that the country could reach a production rate of 1.9 million barrels per day by the end of the year.

Measures have been implemented at the Naval headquarters to enhance surveillance and monitoring of activities in waterways and maritime areas, Matawalle disclosed. He underscored the successful operations conducted, including the destruction of illegal facilities and the apprehension of individuals involved in oil theft.

Matawalle praised the administration of President Bola Tinubu for heavily investing in modern weapons and equipping the military to combat various crimes, including banditry and oil theft. He highlighted the acquisition of advanced attack helicopters during his recent trip to Turkey, emphasizing that the military is well-prepared to address modern challenges.

The Defence Minister assured the public that Nigerian soldiers are adequately trained for contemporary challenges, thanks to strong training institutions. Soldiers have undergone training, both domestically and internationally, to handle the newly acquired equipment effectively.

Matawalle urged Nigerians to appreciate the government’s commitment to national security, emphasizing the readiness of the military to tackle emerging threats. He encouraged citizens to assess the government’s performance and express gratitude for the support provided to the Ministry of Defence and the military.
