Ghana Sacks Hughton After Humiliating AFCON Exit

Ghana has terminated the contract of coach Chris Hughton following their elimination in the group stage of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations(AFCON).

The Black Stars concluded Group B with two points, drawing 2-2 against both Egypt and Mozambique after a 2-1 loss to Cape Verde in their opening match.

Although Ghana harbored slim hopes of progressing as one of the top four third-placed teams, their elimination was confirmed on Tuesday as results did not favor them.

Hughton, who took over as Ghana head coach in February of the previous year, has been relieved of his duties along with the dissolution of the Black Stars’ technical team, as announced by the Ghana Football Association (GFA).

The GFA stated, “The executive council has also taken a decision to dissolve the technical team of the Black Stars. The GFA will in the coming days provide a roadmap on the future direction of the Black Stars.”

Hughton, a former manager of Newcastle United and Brighton, assumed the role of technical adviser for the four-time continental champions in February 2022, succeeding Otto Addo. The coaching change followed Ghana’s disappointing performance in the 2022 World Cup, where they finished at the bottom of Group H.

Despite expressing full support for Hughton after a fan altercation following the loss to Cape Verde, the GFA decided to part ways with the coach after the unexpected draw against Mozambique that led to Ghana’s exit in the AFCON.

The Black Stars had a promising start under Hughton, securing a stoppage-time victory against Madagascar and suffering a 1-0 defeat in Comoros during the early stages of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
