The House of Representatives has criticized Nigeria’s organized labour unions, accusing them of circulating false and exaggerated salary information of lawmakers. According to a statement by House spokesperson Akin Rotimi, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) have been spreading misleading data on social media, which could incite public resentment and damage the Legislature’s credibility.
The statement reaffirmed the House’s commitment to improving working conditions for Nigerian workers and welcomed the suspension of the recent strike action by labour unions. The House Speaker, Abbas Tajudeen, has consistently supported the call for a living wage and better working conditions, but cautioned against setting minimum wages beyond sustainable levels to avoid inflation and economic instability.
Additionally, the House condemned the disruption of critical infrastructure, such as the national grid and airports, during the strike, labeling it economic sabotage. The statement urged the labour unions to cease spreading misinformation about lawmakers’ salaries and to return to the negotiation table to engage in honest and transparent discussions for the benefit of all Nigerians.
