Iran Executes Two Persons For Attack On Shia Shrine In Shiraz

Iran publicly killed two people on Saturday in retaliation for a deadly ISIL (ISIS)-claimed assault on a shrine in Shiraz the previous year.

Following the Supreme Court’s confirmation of their sentences, the two men, named as Mohammed Ramez Rashidi and Naeem Hashem Qatali, were hanged in the early hours of Saturday.

One of the most significant sites in Shia Islam, the Shah Cheragh Shrine in the province of Fars, came under siege on October 26, 2022.

According to information given at the time, an individual armed with an automatic rifle entered the shrine. He started shooting, moved to the main compound, and shot a bunch of pilgrims and personnel.
Authorities initially reported 15 fatalities, but later lowered that to 13, with 40 injuries.

Security personnel intervened and shot and killed the shooter, who Tajik officials identified as being from that country.

When the attack on the shrine occurred, Iran was roiled by widespread demonstrations that had begun in September 2022 in response to the death in detention of Mahsa Amini, 22, who had been detained for allegedly breaking the nation’s required dress code for women.
