Obasanmi Waliyullahi, an Islamic teacher, was sentenced to 21 years in jail on Tuesday by an Ikeja Sexual Offenses and Domestic Violence Court for attempting to sexually attack his 15-year-old student, (name withheld), through penetration and indecent treatment.
Justice Rahman Oshodi sentenced the defendant after the defendant admitted guilt to the two modified offences of attempted sexual assault by penetration and indecent treatment of a child.
For the first count of trying to commit sexual assault by penetration and the second count of indecently treating a child, the judge found Waliyullahi guilty and sentenced him to 14 years in jail.
According to the prosecution’s evidence, Justice Oshodi declared, “I am satisfied that all charges have been established beyond a reasonable doubt because the defendant understood the significance of entering a plea of guilty to the charges brought against him.”The defendant is guilty as stated in the amended charge, in my opinion. He is given a 14-year sentence for attempting to sexually abuse someone by penetrating them, as well as a seven-year term for indecently treating a kid, after taking into account his plea agreement. The sentence is to be served consecutively, and the defendant must register as a sex offender.
The prisoner had already asked the judge to balance justice and mercy because he was a first-time offender.
As a first-time offender, Waliyullahi had earlier asked the court to temper justice with mercy.
Saheed Akindele, the defense attorney, pleaded with the court to balance justice and mercy in his allocutus while expressing regret for his actions and the fact that he supported his family financially.
Earlier, Dr. Babajide Martins, the director of public prosecution, informed the court that the parties had agreed for the defendant to choose a plea deal.
