The Lagos Airport has been shut down due to an industrial action called by the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC). A video circulating online shows frustrated passengers unable to access the airport as aviation workers block all entry points to the domestic terminal. The strike has resulted in the suspension of all flight operations.
The strike aims to push for a higher minimum wage, with organized labour proposing ₦494,000, while the Nigerian government is offering ₦60,000. Despite a last-minute meeting between National Assembly leaders and labour representatives on Sunday night, no agreement was reached, leading to the continuation of the strike.
The Presidency has raised concerns about the economic impact of meeting the labour’s wage demand. Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale, warned that the proposed wage increase could lead to significant economic challenges, including job losses, business closures, and increased prices for goods and services.
