The Lagos State House of Assembly has revealed that a doctor who performed surgery twice on a young boy, Adebola Akin-Bright, leading to the disappearance of his small intestine, was not a qualified surgeon. The doctor, identified as Dr. Abayomi Baiyewu of Obitoks Hospital in the Alimosho area of Lagos, reportedly admitted to the House committee that he was not a surgeon but had relied on his experience as a medical doctor to perform the surgeries.
The investigation also revealed that Dr. Baiyewu did not carry out any medical examination on the boy before the first surgery, relying instead on a report from another hospital where the patient was initially taken. After the first surgery, the boy continued to experience stomach pain and was taken back to Obitoks Hospital, where Dr. Baiyewu performed a second surgery himself. Following further complications, the boy was eventually taken to LASUTH (Lagos State University Teaching Hospital), where it was confirmed that part of his intestine was missing.
The House of Assembly has expressed condolences to the bereaved family and is considering making a formal complaint against Dr. Baiyewu to the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria. They are also reviewing the existing law and considering amendments to ensure stricter monitoring of medical doctors and hospitals.
Adebola Akin-Bright tragically died after the House called on the Lagos State Governor to assist him in seeking treatment abroad. The incident has raised concerns about the quality of healthcare and medical practices in private hospitals in the state.
