“Lateef Jakande Remembered: Olusegun Osoba Highlights His Open-Door Policy and Humility”

Former Governor of Ogun State, Olusegun Osoba, spoke fondly of the late Alhaji Lateef Jakande during the inaugural annual memorial lecture titled “Lateef Jakande: The man, his journalism, his politics” in Lagos. Gatekeepers News reports that Osoba shared insights into Jakande’s leadership style, emphasizing his unique approach to governance.

Osoba recounted how Jakande, during his governorship of Lagos from 1979 to 1983, embraced an open-door policy that allowed unlimited access to people. Jakande’s home became a political clinic of sorts, where he welcomed discussions on various issues, demonstrating his approachability and concern for his constituents.

He praised Jakande’s humility and deep connection to grassroots politics, a quality that set him apart from other governors. Osoba noted that Jakande’s impact extended beyond his role as governor, highlighting his contributions to journalism and his instrumental role in bringing the International Press Institute (IPI) to Nigeria. Additionally, Jakande’s influence led to the establishment of the Nigerian Institute of Journalism (NIJ).

Garba Shehu, the former spokesperson for the presidency, also lauded Jakande’s excellence in journalism, highlighting his dedication to the profession. Jakande’s serious-mindedness and commitment were evident in his journalistic work and his time as a public servant.

The memorial lecture and the heartfelt remarks of Osoba and Shehu shed light on Lateef Jakande’s multifaceted legacy, encompassing journalism, politics, and a people-oriented leadership approach.
