Mob Assaults Policeman After BRT Bus Hits Man Pushed by Police in Lagos

In a disturbing incident, an unidentified policeman was brutally attacked by an angry mob in Lagos after a man, known as Yusuf, was struck by a BRT bus. Eyewitnesses detailed that Yusuf was allegedly pushed into the BRT lane by policemen in the Ketu area of Lagos State.

Reports indicate that the police officers attempted to seize Yusuf’s vehicle, which led to the unfortunate chain of events. The impact of being pushed onto the BRT lane resulted in a collision with an incoming BRT bus, causing Yusuf to collapse due to the crash’s force.

One witness, preferring to remain anonymous, pointed out that it was the policemen’s actions that led to Yusuf’s plight. The victim suffered various degrees of injury due to the incident.

“The policemen were trying to dispossess the man of his vehicle and, in the process, they pushed him on the BRT lane and an incoming bus hit him,” the eyewitness recounted.

Another bystander, also requesting anonymity, shared that once it became apparent that Yusuf had been struck by the BRT bus, the policemen attempted to flee the scene. However, a furious mob managed to apprehend one of the officers.

“The mob beat the policeman mercilessly until he lost consciousness. He sustained severe injuries and is lying unconscious due to substantial blood loss,” the witness added.

A concerned individual at the scene reportedly poured water on the beaten policeman in an effort to revive him. Allegedly, a fellow officer also tried to come to his aid, but his uniform was torn by the furious crowd.

Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Benjamin Hundeyin, countered claims that the police were responsible for the attack on Yusuf and the subsequent beating of the policeman.

Hundeyin explained, “This was a road accident that occurred when a BRT bus hit a minibus that had been stopped by the police for illegally using the BRT lane. The person with the bloodied hand was not shot at all, let alone by the police.”

He further clarified that the officer lying on the ground was not beaten to a stupor by anyone and that both individuals were victims of the same accident. Hundeyin questioned the lack of visual evidence depicting the alleged beating and emphasized that both victims were rescued and are in stable condition.
