In May 2024, Nigeria’s power sector reached a significant milestone by generating 5000 megawatts (MW) of electricity, marking the first time in three years this level has been achieved. Adebayo Adelabu, the Minister of Power, announced this during a ministerial update in Abuja, noting that on May 3rd, 2024, the nation generated, transmitted, and distributed 5,345MW of power, a notable increase from the usual sub-4000MW levels.
The ministry aims to further increase power generation to 6,000MW by the end of the year, an unprecedented target in Nigeria’s history. This effort includes adding 700MW to the grid from Geregu and proposing 3,000MW of utility-scale solar power within the next two years to diversify the energy mix beyond hydropower and gas.
Additionally, the ministry introduced a guaranteed improved service level for Band A customers, promising up to 20 hours of supply daily. This initiative, supported by improved regulatory oversight and cost-reflective tariffs, is a first in ensuring reliable electricity supply for a segment of Nigerian consumers.
