The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has released data on Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) for the 36 states in Nigeria, along with the Federal Capital Territory, for the year 2022. The total IGR generated across the states amounted to N1.93 trillion. Here are the highlights:

The data also revealed that the PAYE (Pay As You Earn) tax category was the largest contributor to total tax revenue, accounting for 67.62% of the total. In contrast, capital gains tax had the lowest share, contributing only 0.24% to total tax revenue.
Additionally, the NBS noted that Oyo, Lagos, and Jigawa states were the top three states with the highest Local Government Area (LGA) revenue in 2022. These states reported LGA revenues of N11.83 billion, N11.51 billion, and N8.70 billion, respectively.
It is evident from these statistics that Lagos remains the leading state in terms of IGR, while Kebbi, Taraba, and Yobe are among the states with the lowest IGR. These figures underscore the need for continued efforts to enhance revenue generation in the less prosperous states.
