Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State has announced that the Agro-Cargo Airport project, situated along the Ilisan-Iperu road in the Ikenne Local Government Area of the state, is on track to be ready for commercial flight operations by December. The governor made this revelation while speaking with reporters following his inspection of the ongoing work at the cargo airport. According to a statement from his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Lekan Adeniran, Abiodun also shared that several international aviation companies have expressed interest in securing concessional operations at the airport, which will enable the state to recover the expenses incurred during its construction.
Abiodun explained, “I’m sure that in the next 30 to 45 days, we should sign the dotted lines of the concessioning of this airport, which would mean that everything the airport has cost us would completely be repaid back to us, and we can use the money to pay our debt and also begin to look at other projects.”
He expressed confidence that the airport would obtain full approval by the end of November or December, at which point commercial flights to various domestic destinations, such as Abuja and Port Harcourt, would commence. Additionally, the governor hinted at the possibility of international flights landing and departing from the airport by the end of the year.
Abiodun emphasized the state’s commitment to creating a truly international airport and acknowledged the interest it has already garnered from global airport operators. He praised the state’s proactive approach in funding and constructing the airport and its strategy to eventually hand it over to concessionaires, a model that has attracted substantial attention.
The governor concluded by highlighting the success of the state’s initiatives, vision, dedication, and focus, despite political challenges and distractions, noting that these efforts are bearing fruit as international airport operators express interest in the project.
