Wale Adedayo, the suspended Chairman of Ijebu East Local Government in Ogun State, has firmly stated his intention to challenge his suspension through democratic means. Adedayo’s suspension was executed by seven councillors, led by Fasheyi Adesuji from Itele Ward 7. The councillors accused Adedayo of maladministration and financial mismanagement, citing around 15 financial irregularities, including the alleged use of N8.2 million to acquire furniture for primary schools and misappropriation of N35 million.
Adedayo swiftly responded, considering the suspension a “hoax” and asserting that it was enforced on the councillors, allegedly in exchange for N1 million. He emphasized that the proper procedure for suspending or impeaching a local government chairman should have been followed, including the initial communication of alleged infractions.
He detailed the events leading up to his suspension, mentioning that the councillors, accompanied by over 100 armed policemen, stormed the Council secretariat with the anticipation of a violent reaction, which did not occur. Adedayo expressed his commitment to democratic processes, stating that he and his supporters would challenge the suspension through lawful means.
Adedayo addressed the allegations against him as baseless and unfounded. He further claimed that the councillors were coerced and even led to the council at gunpoint, with a subsequent trip to Abeokuta after the suspension was carried out. He alleged that N1 million was offered to each signatory of his suspension. Adedayo also indicated his willingness to have the financial records of the local government scrutinized by the EFCC (Economic and Financial Crimes Commission) to clear his name.
This incident showcases Adedayo’s determination to defend his position and reputation using legal and democratic avenues, while highlighting the complexity of local government politics and power dynamics.
