Oyo govt close down church in Ibadan over noise pollution

The Oyo State Government has sealed a new generation church in Golden Estate, Oluyole in Ibadan, the state capital.

The state authorities stated that the church was locked due to noise pollution.

It stated that the action was taken against a branch of Christ Life Church in the region, following many unresolved efforts taken by the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources to mediate between the complainants, residents, and church management.
The Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Architect Abdulmojeed Mogbonjubola, stated this on Friday.
He went on to say that the state government had no choice but to block off the church grounds in order to prevent uncontrollable escalation of simmering tensions between locals and the church on Sunday.

He stated that Ministry authorities visited the location on Thursday, November 9, 2023, after receiving many complaints from next-door homeowners about the church’s persistent noise via formal letters and phone calls.

He stated that the crew recorded the sound level of church events at regular intervals, beginning with praise and worship, and that the average measurement was 74 dB.

He declared that the church’s actions violated the Extant Environmental Regulations of 2023, Section 58, Paragraph (b), which says that noise limitations for residential areas during the daytime shall not exceed 65 decibels.

He underlined that a resolution meeting with the parties was convened in the ministry’s conference room on November 29, 2023, during which the church declined to sign the undertaking letter, citing the need to obtain approval from its headquarters and report back on Monday, December 4, 2023.

He argued that the state authorities opted to seal the church owing to ongoing noncompliance with the standards.
