“PDP Urges Tribunal to Stop Bold and Unruly Legislators’ Defections”

In a bold move, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) of Ebonyi State has taken a stance against the rampant and heedless party defections by legislators, urging the Governorship Election Petitions Tribunal in Abuja to address this pressing issue. The party’s concern stems from the petition challenging Francis Nwifuru’s victory as governor in the March 18, 2023, governorship election. The PDP alleges that Nwifuru remained a member of their party when he contested the election under the All Progressives Congress (APC) banner.

Speaking during a press conference, Chief Abia Onyike, the Director of Strategic Communications for PDP, emphasized that the core of the petition is the assertion that Nwifuru’s membership in the PDP persisted throughout the election period, rendering him ineligible to be sponsored by the APC.

Chief Onyike stated, “Election is a serious constitutional endeavor, and participants must respect the ground norm that governs it. Political office holders must not be allowed to benefit from their wilful disregard for law whenever they decide to change their political allegiance.”

The PDP highlights Section 177(C) of the Nigerian Constitution, which outlines the rules for candidate sponsorship by political parties. They underscore that the constitution does not intend for individuals to belong to multiple political parties simultaneously. Their contention arises from Nwifuru’s history as a PDP member and his subsequent sponsorship by the APC, despite his ongoing membership with the PDP.

As the tribunal weighs the evidence and arguments, the PDP remains steadfast in its pursuit of justice. They assert their confidence that the law will prevail over political maneuvering and express gratitude to the media for their dedication to democracy. Additionally, they acknowledge the supporters who have stood by their side throughout the trial, vowing that their commitment to the progress and development of Ebonyi State will be recognized.

In this high-stakes political battle, the PDP seeks not only to challenge the election outcome but to establish accountability for political loyalty and adherence to constitutional principles. As the tribunal’s decision looms, the outcome could have far-reaching implications for the interplay between party affiliation, election participation, and legislative responsibilities.
