Pensioners in Ekiti go spiritual over crises in Nigeria

On Thursday, the Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP) Ekiti State Council prayed to God for help with the nation’s economic woes and insecurity.

The NUP State Secretariat in Ado-Ekiti hosted the inaugural prayer summit of the 2024 series, “Seeking the Supremacy of God’s Power.”

Comrade Joel Akinola, the Chairman of the NUP, Ekiti State Council, said that since most people in the nation are going through difficult times financially, spiritual intervention is necessary in the current state of affairs.

He bemoaned that leaders at all levels of government constitute the country’s problem, even while he acknowledged that only God could save the nation and affect the choices made by its leaders.

“On account of the current state of affairs in the nation, including Ekiti State, only God can step in,” he declared. God will appoint someone to handle Nigeria’s crisis. That Nigeria is not doing well is known even to the blind. Our government has the wrong priorities, and we are suffering in the midst of plenty.

“The leadership in this country is the issue. The leaders we have at the municipal, state, and federal levels of government are regrettable. Nigeria just needs better leadership; the country has no issues.

The threat of kidnappings, homicide, and overall insecurity are serious concerns. People’s lives are becoming intolerable due to the exorbitant cost of goods and services that we are seeing. This is mostly due to the careless increase in fuel prices.

“The union begs the Federal Government to take immediate action and carry out the required interventions to lessen the suffering that Nigerians are enduring.”

Additionally, he urged the release of additional monies to cover the remaining two and five months’ worth of pensions owed to the local and state governments, respectively, and called on the Ekiti State government to remit the partial payment of their pensions and unpaid gratuities.

“We implore His Excellency (Governor Oyebanji) to remit the outstanding four months deductions from our pensions,” he stated, addressing the unremitted payments due to pensioners. Given the increasing cost of goods and services in the nation, we are in more need of these deductions than ever. The 2018 April, May, June, and July months are included in the deductions.

“Unfortunately, in these difficult times, some of our members make as little as N340 a month. What will this amount purchase, one wonders. For this reason, we are pleading with Mr. Governor to carry out the necessary adjustments to our pensions in accordance with the requirements of the Nigerian Constitution and the current economic climate.
