Peter Obi’s Comment Sparks Controversy

A statement by Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, has stirred debate after he declared that democracy in Nigeria had collapsed. Speaking at the Emeka Ihedioha Colloquium, Obi lamented the state of governance, pointing to the crisis in Rivers State as proof that democratic institutions are failing. “Everything has been knocked down. We should stop lamenting and start rebuilding,” he said.

Presidential adviser Bayo Onanuga quickly fired back, dismissing Obi’s remarks as exaggerated. He argued that Nigeria’s democracy remains intact, saying, “How can a democracy that has strengthened for 26 years be said to have collapsed?” He also cautioned Obi against making statements that could mislead the public.

The exchange has fueled discussions about Nigeria’s political climate, with some agreeing with Obi’s concerns while others believe his words were too strong.
