Obasanjo Insists Lawmakers Took Bribes Over Rivers Crisis

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has alleged that members of the National Assembly were bribed to support the declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State. In a video seen by Daily Sun, Obasanjo was heard discussing the matter with House of Representatives member Ikenga Ugochinyere, who denied reports that lawmakers received $200,000 each for their support.

Ugochinyere dismissed the claim, saying, “Nobody gave anyone $200,000. That is just what I want to correct.” However, Obasanjo stood by his statement, insisting he had firsthand knowledge. “I heard it from those who got it and told me they got it. If you didn’t get it, maybe your case is different, but don’t tell me what I know,” he said.

This allegation comes after Mukhtar Betara, Chairman of the House Committee on the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), also denied that lawmakers were given cash to back the emergency rule. The controversy continues to stir reactions across the country.
