Supporters of Mudashiru Obasa, the recently impeached Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, were detained by police on Monday near the Assembly complex. Obasa, representing Agege Constituency I, was removed from his position amid allegations of gross misconduct and abuse of office. Following his impeachment, a group of men believed to be his loyalists was apprehended for loitering in the area.
In a viral video, the detained individuals, reportedly APC youths from Obasa’s Orile Agege constituency, expressed confusion over their arrest. Speaking from a police van, one of them stated, “We are like 20 here. A tangible reason has not been given for apprehending us.” They also appealed for food and water while singing the popular political anthem “On Your Mandate.”
Meanwhile, the Assembly has moved forward with electing Mojisola Meranda as its new Speaker, marking a historic moment as she becomes the first female Speaker in Lagos State. The transition highlights a significant political shift, underscoring the Assembly’s commitment to restructuring its leadership and governance approach.
