A group of alleged Creek-dwelling hoodlums has reportedly abducted ten individuals, including four children, in Isua, JK2 community located in Engenni, Ahoada West Local Government Area of Rivers State.
The victims, six women accompanied by their four children, were taken while harvesting crops in their farms to prevent flood-related destruction.
Sources from the area indicate that the kidnappers emerged from the nearby community of Oshobele, having crossed the river to reach the victims. This incident has instilled fear within the community and has highlighted the security challenges they face.
Ezuwa, a local resident, stated, “These women went to their farms to harvest crops because of the floods coming. And these boys (abductors) have to cross from the neighbouring Oshobele areas to the farm and kidnap them and their children.”
Ezuwa also shared concerns that this event could escalate into a communal crisis between the Ekpeye and Engenni communities, as tensions seem to be rising due to the situation.
The kidnappers had previously demanded a security payment of N450,000 (Nigerian Naira) from the community, which was paid. They then imposed a weekly payment of N1,500 on each household, creating a climate of fear and control.
Ezuwa called on the Rivers State Government to intervene and secure the release of the kidnapped individuals. He expressed concern that if not properly addressed, the situation could lead to conflict between Isua and their neighboring Oshobele community.
The Rivers State Police Command’s spokesperson, Grace Iringe-Koko, confirmed the incident and assured that efforts were being made to rescue the victims and apprehend the kidnappers.
