The Lagos State House of Assembly has confirmed 15 out of 18 nominees sent by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for ratification and confirmation, bringing the total number of confirmed cabinet members to 37. These cabinet members will serve in various positions in the Lagos State government.
Among the newly confirmed cabinet members are Professor Akin Abayomi and Mr. Gbenga Omotoso, who previously served as Commissioners for Health and Information and Strategy, respectively, and were initially rejected by the Assembly during the first screening process.
However, the Assembly rejected the nomination of former Commissioner for Economic Planning and Budget, Sam Egube, for the second time. Engr. Olalere Odusote, a former Commissioner for Energy, was also rejected for the second time.
The House decided to step down the confirmation of a new nominee, Tolani Akibu.
This confirmation follows earlier tensions between the Lagos State House of Assembly and the Governor, which led to the rejection of some of the Governor’s initial nominees. The Governance Advisory Council (GAC), the apex leadership body of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos, intervened in the matter, urging both parties to find a resolution.
Governor Sanwo-Olu subsequently sent a new list of nominees, including some of the previously rejected ones, to the Assembly for confirmation. The Assembly’s confirmation of these 15 nominees represents progress in resolving the differences between the two branches of government.
