Vice President Kashim Shettima hailed Subomi Balogun as an icon of the banking sector.

Vice President Kashim Shettima praised the late Otunba Subomi Michael, founder of First City Monument Bank (FCMB), as a remarkable individual who revolutionized Nigeria’s banking sector and left a lasting impact on the world. Shettima, representing President Bola Tinubu, shared these sentiments during the funeral service held at Cathedral Church of Our Saviour in Ijebu Ode, Ogun State.

Highlighting Otunba Balogun’s philanthropy and his significant role in the establishment of FCMB, Shettima expressed gratitude for his contributions and emphasized that his legacy would continue to inspire future generations.

Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State also paid tribute to Otunba Balogun, describing him as an intellectual powerhouse and a pride of Ijebuland. Abiodun acknowledged Balogun’s distinguished career in the banking sector, which included serving as Principal Counsel and Company Secretary to the Nigerian Industrial Development Bank (NIDB) before founding FCMB. He further noted Balogun’s generous donation of a fully equipped General Hospital to Ijebu Ode in 1989.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State praised Otunba Balogun’s contributions to the Nigerian economy as a prominent technocrat, administrator, and philanthropist. Sanwo-Olu recognized Balogun’s role in the growth and development of the banking sector, particularly as the founder of FCMB.

The funeral was attended by notable dignitaries, including former Head of State Gen. Yakubu Gowon, Alhaji Aliko Dangote, Mr. Femi Otedola, and Dr. Femi Adesina, President of the African Development Bank.

During the sermon, Most Revd Michael Fape emphasized the importance of living a righteous life and making a positive impact on communities, states, and nations.

Otunba Balogun, revered as the Olori Omoba of Ijebuland and the Asiwaju of Ijebu Christians, passed away at the age of 89 in London, England on Friday, May 18.
