The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mr Nyesom Wike, has warned against politicizing insecurity in the FCT.
Wike, who issued the warning during a media briefing in Abuja on Monday, also claimed that politicians were capitalizing on the existing security issues to cause panic among FCT residents.
He is concerned that, rather than commending security authorities’ efforts to combat insecurity, some residents have continued to cause panic by issuing false alarms.
The minister, who praised security services for their efforts thus far, stated that media interviews provide an opportunity to keep Nigerians informed about security challenges in the FCT.
“Following the first kidnapping event in Bwari, President Tinubu gathered the service chiefs and my humble self, and within a few days, you can see what they accomplished.
“But nobody’s talking about it. Nobody has come to commend them. He remarked, “All you hear is that security has collapsed.”
He urged locals to support the government and stop generalizing security challenges as if they were commonplace.
According to him, no one is pleased that kidnapping has returned to the FCT.
“Nigerians forget rapidly, which is why we have always advised against politicizing the problem of security.
“Remember, during the previous administration, we were told that bandits had entered Kuje jail and destroyed havoc. Nobody said there was no Minister of FCT. A minister was present.
“Nobody mentions FCT being the capital. Remember, there was an administration in which terrorists came and burned down the United Nations building? It was at FCT.
“Remember, there was an assault to burn down the police headquarters. A minister was present.
“All across the world, we’ve heard of armed persons going to school in cities and shooting at random, murdering 15 to 16 people in the United States and Britain, as developed as they are.
“That does not mean that the security in those cities has collapsed.”
The minister advised residents to learn to respect government efforts and to provide intelligence information to security authorities to help them solve the situation.
