Police in Bauchi State have detained an 18-year-old pregnant housewife who is accused of killing her 5-year-old stepdaughter for defecating on her.
Auwal Muhammad, the commissioner of police for the state of Bauchi, said this on Tuesday when presenting the suspect to reporters at the command center.
He claimed that the suspect, Khadija Adamu, was detained after inflicting grievous wounds on the child. Adamu is a resident of the Kandahar region, a suburb of the city of Bauchi in Bauchi State.
“On September 28, 2023, at approximately 9.25 p.m., one Abdulaziz Adamu, male (38), of the Kandahar area of Bauchi, reported at the A’ Divisional Police Headquarters that on September 28, 2023, at approximately 4 p.m., one Khadija Adamu, female (18), of the same address, beat up her stepdaughter named Hafsat Garba, female (five), resulting in serious injuries to her body. After learning of the incident, a group of detectives under the direction of DPO sprung into action, hurried to the spot, and transported the woman to the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital in Bauchi, where the doctor certified her dead.
According to the preliminary investigation, the victim was beaten up by the suspect after it was claimed that she had passed stool on her clothes, ruining them, and as a result, she had varying degrees of injuries across her body.
He claimed that during questioning, the suspect “confessed to the alleged offense against her without much argument,” adding that the investigation is still ongoing and that the suspect will thereafter be charged in court for the established criminal as appropriate.
