Ikeja Electric Distribution Company (IE) has announced that it will temporarily stop accepting new orders for prepaid electricity meters. The decision was made to allow the company to focus on clearing its backlog of meter requests from customers. Morenikeji Amosun, the head of prepaid revenue management and metering at IE, shared this information during a virtual stakeholders’ meeting.
Amosun explained that the company has a significant backlog of meter requests and wants to ensure that customers who have already paid for their meters receive them promptly before taking on new orders. This move comes in response to increased demand for prepaid meters following a recent price increase approved by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC).
NERC’s approval led to higher prices for prepaid meters, with single-phase meters now priced at N81,975.16k (previously N58,661.69k) and three-phase meters at N143,836.10k (previously N109,684.36k), excluding value-added tax (VAT).
IE is working to meet the needs of existing customers who have paid for meters at the previous rates before considering new meter orders. Customers are urged to exercise patience during this period of adjustment.
