Kogi state politician takes police to court over declaring him wanted

Musa Saliu, A businessman, politician, and past governorship candidate for Kogi State in 2023. has taken the Inspector General of Police, Olukayode Egbetokun, before a Federal High Court in Abuja over his false declaration as a wanted person in a land dispute.

In the lawsuit filed on Friday, June 14, 2024, and in a copy of the documents that was obtained on Sunday, the applicant, represented by Femi Motojesi Esq., requests that the court rule that the police’s publication of his name and picture as a wanted person with reference number CB: 3510/LX/FHQ/SEB/ABJ/T.7/Vo. 1/20 in the Special Police Gazette bulletin constituted a violation of his fundamental rights.

In the lawsuit, Saliu argued that the police did not have the authority to engage in the act of debt recovery for the third respondent (Olorunfemi), who is a subscriber to the applicant’s (Saliu’s) estate under construction.

The conflict started when Olorunfemi paid N25 million to have one of his houses built, but work stopped after the FCT Department of Development Control demolished the estate, according to Saliu.

He further revealed that after informing all of the estate’s subscribers of his attempts to rectify the situation and make a return visit, Olorunfemi still asked the police to retrieve her money.

Under Sections 34, 35, 41, and 46; Articles 5 and 6 of the African Charter on Human and People’s Rights Cap 10 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004; and other fundamental rights provisions, the estate developer sued the police for their actions.
