Sapaade, Ogun State – The management of Gateway ICT Polytechnic took decisive action on Monday, announcing the immediate closure of the institution in response to a series of relentless robbery attacks on students. The management has directed students to stay away from the campus for the next two weeks.
This move comes after a string of armed robberies targeted students, resulting in the theft of valuables and incidents of sexual assault on female students. The most recent attack, which occurred last Saturday, tragically claimed the life of one student, with nine others sustaining injuries.
Over the past two weeks, these marauders have conducted more than three assaults on students and residents of Isara, Ipara, and Ode communities. Frustrated and angered by the continuous attacks, students staged a protest last week to voice their grievances.
In response to the escalating situation, the management has decided to temporarily close the school until normalcy is restored. Olatunji Idowu Alexander, the President of the Students’ Union Government, confirmed the development.
In an official memo signed by the acting Registrar, J. O. Popoola, the school management announced the implementation of online classes for students who recently resumed for the 2023/2024 academic session. The memo states, “All physical lectures on campus have been suspended for the next two weeks with immediate effect from Monday, December 4, 2023. Online lectures have commenced, and students are directed to participate in online classes to continue their studies for the current semester.”
