Tinubu Cheers Oshoala, Hails Super Falcons

In a gracious event at their Lagos residence, President Bola Tinubu and First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu welcomed Super Falcons striker Asisat Oshoala, the 2023 CAF Women’s Player of the Year and Barcelona Femeni star. The gathering, as reported by the President’s Special Adviser on Media & Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale, aimed to honor Oshoala for her outstanding achievement as the best African female footballer of the year, marking her sixth such recognition.
President Tinubu and the First Lady took the opportunity to congratulate Oshoala, acknowledging her exceptional contributions to women’s football on the continent. In a statement, they expressed pride in the accomplishments of Nigerian women, both in football and across various fields globally, highlighting qualities such as excellence, tenacity, ingenuity, and resilience that characterize the Nigerian character.

The statement conveyed, “Nigerian women will always have a pride of place in the world. What our ladies have achieved in football, our women are achieving in all fields of endeavor around the world—rising to the top and demonstrating the best of the Nigerian character of excellence, tenacity, ingenuity, and resilience.”

Acknowledging the achievements of other notable Nigerian women, including star sprinter Tobi Amusan, media mogul Mo Abudu, and the Director-General of the World Trade Organisation, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, President Tinubu and the First Lady assured Oshoala of the nation’s unwavering support for her and other Nigerian women pursuing excellence in their chosen paths.

Following the warm reception, Oshoala expressed her gratitude to President Tinubu and the First Lady, stating, “During the last World Cup, we had a couple of issues, and they intervened and have been very supportive to the girls, even after the competition.” The event served as a celebration of women’s accomplishments and a recognition of their impact across various domains.
