A heartbreaking incident unfolded at BECO Comprehensive Secondary School in the Kwi community of Plateau State’s Riyom Local Government Area. Bandits attacked the school, resulting in the tragic deaths of two teachers, both of whom were recently married. The victims were holding a meeting to prepare for the school’s upcoming ‘Speech and Prize-giving Day’ when the attack occurred.
The attackers, identified as Fulani herdsmen, reportedly arrived with their cattle, initially leading to a confrontation as staff members asked them to remove their animals from the school premises. Unfortunately, the situation escalated, and the assailants opened fire on the teachers. Alongside the fatalities, the Vice Principal of the school was also wounded in the attack.
Community leaders and youth organizations, including the Berom Youths Moulders Association, have condemned the incident and are urging authorities to take action. They are calling for a ban on open grazing in the region to prevent such tragic events from happening again.
Solomon Dalyop Mwantiri, the leader of the Berom Youth Moulder-Association, expressed concerns about the brazen movement of armed individuals in nearby communities and their disregard for local livelihoods. The incident has stirred emotions in the region and sparked discussions about security measures and land use practices.
Efforts to reach the Police Public Relations Officer for the state, Alfred Alabo, for comment were unsuccessful at the time of reporting.
This unfortunate incident sheds light on the ongoing challenges faced by communities in Plateau State and emphasizes the need for proactive measures to ensure the safety and security of citizens.
