The United States Chargé d’Affaires, David Greene, has commended local organisations in Nigeria for their commitment to combating sexual and gender-based violence (GBV). During a “No Tolerance March” in Lagos, Greene praised the Women at Risk International Foundation for their comprehensive support services for abuse survivors and pledged continued American assistance in protecting vulnerable women and girls.
Greene highlighted that gender-based violence is a human rights abuse and a manifestation of unequal power based on gender. He emphasized that preventing and responding to GBV globally is a cornerstone of U.S. foreign policy and human rights promotion efforts. He referred to the updated U.S. Strategy to Prevent and Respond to Gender-Based Violence Globally, released in December 2022, which guides interventions abroad, including awareness programs and policy reforms.
The envoy noted that over $50 million has been invested through the U.S. Mission in Nigeria to advance gender equality and support women and girls in escaping GBV threats. He specifically mentioned USAID’s “No Means No” program, which has trained over 50,000 girls and young women on escaping dangerous GBV situations. Additionally, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, via PEPFAR, provides support to integrate HIV treatment services for GBV victims.
